Beach Wheelchairs in Cornwall

Map showing locations of Beach Wheelchairs in Cornwall
New Prototype Beach Wheelchair
Cornwall Mobility, in partnership with Disability Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, work with Cornwall Council as well as a diverse range of coastal charities and businesses in providing all-terrain wheelchairs, also known as sand chairs, for the public to use on a number of beaches in Cornwall.
The all-terrain wheelchairs have been designed for outdoor use and have large inflatable wheels which allow them to roll over sand and pebbles with remarkable ease giving a comfortable and safe ride.
This has allowed people with mobility challenges the pleasure and freedom to access and enjoy Cornwall’s beaches where they may have found it more difficult in the past.
The all-terrain wheelchairs are not suitable for all beaches as some are too steep, remote and dangerous for the chairs to be used safely. Cornwall Mobility has ascertained that the beaches where it deploys these chairs for public use are safe and suitable for their use.
The sand chairs are available along the Cornish coastline as indicated in the map above.
The new chair is available to hire, free of charge, at the following locations:
- Fistral beach, Newquay - Perranporth Gardens Charities, Perranporth beach - Riviere Sands Holiday Park, Hayle - St Michael's Mount, Marazion, and - Seaton Beach Cafe, Seaton beach, Looe
It is advised that you contact the hire outlet beforehand to ensure that the sand chair is available.
Hire is usually free with a form of surety (driver's licence, hotel key etc).
Thanks Gwen for posting - it's great to find out about so many locations in such a popular holiday destination.
Just a question from watching your You Tube video...Do the chairs change from the seating position with legs bend to the legs straight position? Or are they different types of chairs?
There are two types of beach wheelchair - the seat of one type is set in a 'straight leg' position; the seat of the other is set in a 'legs down' position.

Disappointed son by: Howellsl
Travelled especially to the beach near Falmouth so that our some could use the chair. Rang ahead and left a message. After getting there, we were told the council hadn’t delivered the chairs this year. Please update you website so as not to disappoint others.

Thank you for letting us know. Maybe it was because of COVID???

No chair available by: Anonymous
Living in Bude we use Summerleaze beach a lot.
My son is now in need of a wheelchair and Summerleaze beach doesn't have access to it anymore.
I am aware the lovely local surf school Big Blue has tried to get access to hoist the chair but no one seems to want to help.
My son is now cut off from the beach and adapted surf lessons because of this.
Those lessons are a life line for his physical needs and mental health.
Very disappointing for a main tourist beach in North Cornwall.
ANSWER
HI so sorry you are having difficulties on Summerleaze Beach. Hopefully, your comment can help raise awareness that more beach wheelchairs are required.
It might be worth writing to the local tourist board and Cornwall Mobility.

We've been holidaying in Harlyn Bay, for nearly 60 years, and now have a 30yr old disabled son, who desperately needs a beach wheelchair to use!
Please, please could you provide one for the surf school there? 🙏
We're too old to be carrying him anymore, and it's the only time he ever gets to go in the sea, which he loves more than anything in the world!! 😭
